Welcome

to my

Journey

At 43 years old, with no martial arts experience, I embark on an adventure into Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Join me as I share every milestone, challenge, and triumph on this inspiring path.

Why Start Now?

I’m exploring martial arts for reasons other than self-defense and have no interest in debating which style is the most effective or efficient for fighting.

The interest in traditional martial arts has been around since I was a kid. For us old guys, this is the era when everyone wanted to be a Ninja. But as we also know, life happens and things get in the way. I’m now old as dirt, a professional in my field, and looking to learn something new.

This is also not just a pursuit of learning a particular move set but learning the ART of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. I’m driven by the excitement of exploring the culture, traditions and history surrounding these practices.

Finally, I’m noticing age creeping up on me, which has sparked my interest in the mental and physical benefits of these arts—whether it’s strengthening my core, adding regular exercise to my routine, or keeping my brain sharp and practicing self-humility through learning something new

.

What Exactly Am I Learning?

Kung Fu

Shaolin Kung-Fu, rooted in the ancient traditions of the Shaolin Temple, comes alive through its renowned 5 Animal Style, where the fierce Tiger, graceful Crane, precise Mantis, flexible Snake, and flowing Dragon inspire unique techniques. This dynamic approach blends strength, balance, and fluidity, reflecting the rich history and philosophy that make this martial art a profound journey of both body and mind.

Tai-Chi

Yang Style Tai Chi, a graceful and flowing form of Tai Chi originating from the Yang family, embodies a harmonious blend of slow, deliberate movements that promote balance, relaxation, and inner peace. Rooted in Taoist philosophy, this style emphasizes fluid transitions and deep breathing, offering a meditative practice that nurtures both physical health and mental clarity.

Kung Fu Chronicles

Join me on this blog as I share my experiences after each class, covering the techniques I learn, my progress, challenges, and thoughts that come with starting this journey at 43. Along the way, I will also explore and discuss the culture behind these arts and dive into related media, like martial arts films, to enrich my adventure.
